We had a gorgeous day on thursday this week, with the sun shining, and spring in the air. The buds are beginning to come out on the trees, and our plum trees were blooming as well. I saw this cool craft on pinterest painting blossoms with the bottom of 2 litre bottles, and thought it would be a fun craft to do with the boys. Of course, this weekend has been grey, mucky, and rainy, but we got to bring a little bit of spring inside our homes yesterday. This craft is also part of the Kids Weekly Coop at Lets Lasso The Moon! Come check out all the other cool crafts and science ideas there!

What you need:

  • paint (we used blue, black, and pink)
  • 2 litre bottles
  • brushes
  • straws
  • paper
Our inspiration, our blooming plum trees

For our first painting, we started off with a blob of black paint. I think I thinned ours down with water a little bit too much, you want to thin it a little bit so it’s easy to blow, but not too thin

Then, I had the boys blow the black paint around to make a tree

This was the fun part. Then, I let them splatter the pink paint onto the canvas to make blossoms. They totally LOVED doing this. WARNING: this is a messy craft.

Splatter splatter splatter!

Our finished splattered trees. It looks very abstract, and the boys loved making it. Here was my six year old’s finished painting

My three year old’s splatter tree.

For the second painting, I had the boys paint the background a sky color. I let them choose how much they wanted to cover the paper.

Then, we painted on trees and used the 2 L bottle as a blossom print maker.

And our finished print blossom trees. Here is my six year old’s project.

Here is my three year old’s painting.

Overall, these were two really fun projects to do, and the boys heartily enjoyed themselves. Yes, they got very messy, and I had pink paint splatters everywhere, but the glow of pride in their faces seeing their finished paintings was worth all the mess. We’re going to be hanging these little windows of spring around our house to enjoy to counteract the greyness outside. I hope you guys have fun with your own little ones doing this project!

{Snips and snails and sweet stripey suckers} Seattle Area Childrens Photographer

Sometimes I love just taking the boys out and doing our own photoshoot. Of course, having a giant lollipop bribe, er, “prop”, just sweetened the deal for the kids. You know what else I love? That while I love matchy shirts and buy them for my kids, my boys actually love to dress up like [...]

That while I love matchy shirts and buy them for my kids, my boys actually love to dress up like each other. I love these kids!

What? I’m not suppose to eat the prop, mom?

MMmmmmmMmmmmm how many licks does it take to get a little boy hypered up?

Show mommy the lollipop! heh

My littlest one was more interested in doing anything but show me his lollipop

I love how little brother is like, mom, can I go back to eating my lolly now?

He posed himself. Honest.

Those eyes kill me. I am going to be in trouble when he hits the teenage years.

My boys, love these kids.

Very sleepy, very poseable, and oh so adorable. Thank you for letting me meet your sweet baby boy. Congratulations to the family, and welcome to the world Baby B!

Meet Baby B!

 Such a sleepy boy

Hey look! He opened his eyes and looked straight at my camera for me.

Being held by dad

Such an easy baby to photograph. I wish all my babies were this sleepy.

I love his spikey hair, it was such awesomeness.

Squishy baby in daddy’s arms

Hey look, it’s a baby in a cocoon!

{Pennies in Vinegar} Seattle Area Lifestyle Photographer

Another great science website I found is Science Bob. I’ve looked at a ton of “kid’s science experiments!” books but I really wanted to go beyond the basic “baking soda and vinegar” combinations and show them other chemical interactions. When I saw his experiment on  ”How To Clean Pennies in Vinegar” I knew that was exactly what I was looking for! It involved basic things we had in our house, and showed cool chemical reactions with acids. For more great science experiments, check out Adventures in Mommyness‘s Science Sunday (linky at the bottom of this post)!

What You Need:

  • vinegar
  • salt
  • some other type of acid (optional; we used orange juice, you can also use lemon juice)
  • old, dull pennies
  • quarters/dimes/nickes or nuts and bolts (optional)
  • water
  • paper towels

We started off with our question: What happens when you put pennies in vinegar and salt? (1/4 cup vinegar to 1 tsp salt)

The boys’ hypothesis on what they think will happen.  Samuel thought “it will turn colors”

Our liquids! Clockwise: vinegar and salt (dark pink); orange juice (purple); distill water as our “control” (blue); just vinegar (light pink)

Pennies before the experiment. I picked nice and dull ones, most of them were before 1969

We put pennies in the liquids. You can see the acid cleaning actually starting!

We took the pennies out and dried them off. Cool, eh? The boys were very impressed.

BONUS! This is what happened to the pennies when we took them out of the vinegar/salt solution and DID NOT dry them off.  (we left them alone for about an hour). The green stuff is a compound called malachite, a copper carbonite, formed with the penny oxidizing (wet copper reacting with the oxygen in the air).

After you take the pennies out of the vinegar/salt solution, here’s something else you can do. You can either put nuts/bolts in it, or quarter/dimes/nickels. They will attract the free floating copper ions and turn copperish color. You can see it best on the coins at the bottom of the photo

And what we learned: Pennies in vinegar turn “siny” (shiny).

Here are some direction comparions of before and after with drying the pennies

And a before and after with NOT drying the pennies

And the science behind what happened!

{Big fun in the big city} Seattle Area Childrens Photographer

We’re very lucky that we live near the gorgeous city of Seattle. Not only do we get to do cool things like see Santa’s Space Rocket in the Space Needle, but just walking around we can watch the ferries cross Elliott Bay, see sea lions, and even just run around, and dance like no one is watching. Well, at least, that is what I imagine goes through my boys’ minds whenever we take them downtown shopping. :)

What’s a visit to Seattle without visiting Pike Place market?

Here are the boys in the little park right across from the Market. You can see my youngest is jumping in glee

You thought I was joking about the dancing like no one was watching, didn’t you?

We found this cool mosaic, where they continued their mad improv dancing.

Cheeky smiles all around!

This is on the pedestrian bridge above 1st avenue. My kids love to jump.

And this is what a sibling shot looks like at my house – yes, that is younger brother photobombing older brother’s jump shot

Overall, I think they had a good time and it was a fun memory. And at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters.
